FAQs
1. What is the average weight of a Maine Coon?
MAINE COON WEIGHT CHART
For anyone new to the enchanting world of Maine Coons and dreaming of bringing a kitten into their life, a common question arises:
How much should a Maine Coon kitten weigh at different stages of growth?
Here's the breakdown:
It's important to note that there aren't rigid weight standards due to the highly individual nature of these majestic cats. Weight depends on a variety of factors, including genetics, physical attributes, breed types (European, American, etc.), and bone structures (light, heavy, broad, fine-boned, long, short).
The weight trajectory also hinges on the pace of development. Sometimes, the tiniest kitten in its early stages surpasses or catches up in weight with its initially larger siblings at a certain point.
Hence, this chart provides approximate weight values for Maine Coons from birth to three years and beyond. Slight deviations below the given values don't necessarily imply that the kitten will be small. It's crucial to understand that Maine Coons undergo a prolonged developmental phase, continuing to grow and gain weight until they reach 4-5 years of age!

The price of a Maine Coon kitten can vary depending on the individual kitten, pedigree, quality, age, development, and other factors.
This price reflects much more than the kitten itself. Raising Maine Coon kittens responsibly requires a significant ongoing investment of time, care, and resources.
Our cats and kittens are raised on premium-quality food, with carefully selected wet and dry diets appropriate for their age and development. We also use high-quality litter, which is especially important in a multi-cat home environment. Veterinary care is another major part of responsible breeding, including routine exams, vaccinations, deworming, health monitoring, and any additional care that may be needed.
There are also many everyday expenses that people often do not see. Toys are used constantly and usually need to be replaced every few months — sometimes even sooner. Litter boxes, bowls, grooming tools, bedding, scratching posts, cat trees, and other equipment also wear out quickly, especially with Maine Coons, because they are large, strong cats with big paws, powerful bodies, and serious claws.
Furniture, blankets, beds, sofas, and home surfaces also experience much more wear in a cattery environment than in an ordinary home. Maintaining a clean, safe, comfortable space for kittens and adult cats requires constant cleaning, replacement, repair, and improvement.
In addition, there are costs connected with maintaining the cattery itself: heating and cooling, cleaning supplies, website maintenance, advertising, photography, communication with families, registration, paperwork, building and maintaining safe cat spaces, catios, and enrichment areas.
But beyond the financial cost, there is also the personal commitment. A cattery does not have weekends, holidays, or days off. Cats still need to be fed, cleaned, monitored, groomed, and cared for every single day. Pregnant queens, newborn kittens, growing kittens, and adult cats all require attention, observation, and care — often at inconvenient hours.
Sometimes even leaving for a few hours or visiting family in another city requires careful planning. Responsible breeding is not simply a hobby; it is a daily commitment and a lifestyle.
For this reason, the price of a well-raised Maine Coon kitten is not arbitrary. In most cases, it simply reflects the real cost of raising healthy, socialized, confident kittens with the care, time, and attention they deserve.
When you adopt from us, you are not only bringing home a beautiful Maine Coon kitten — you are also receiving the result of many months of care, planning, observation, socialization, and love.

In general, Maine Coons are considered one of the most family-friendly and socially adaptable cat breeds. Their affectionate nature, calm temperament, intelligence, and curiosity often allow them to integrate beautifully into homes with children, cats, dogs, and even other animals.
One of the qualities many people love most about Maine Coons is their ability to form strong bonds not only with people, but also with other pets. Many of our kitten families regularly share photos and updates showing wonderful friendships between their Maine Coons and dogs — often beginning within the very first days after the kitten arrives home. We have also received stories of Maine Coons peacefully interacting with rabbits and other companion animals.
Maine Coons are typically:
social and people-oriented
playful but gentle
curious rather than fearful
adaptable to busy family environments
and emotionally connected to their owners
They often enjoy being involved in daily household life and many become true companions who follow their people from room to room.
With children, Maine Coons are usually patient and tolerant, especially when raised in a respectful and calm environment. However, interactions between kittens and very young children should always be supervised carefully.
Very small children and young kittens are both still learning boundaries, communication, and gentle handling. Because of this, accidental scratching, rough play, falls, or stressful situations can sometimes occur even in loving homes. For families with toddlers or very young children, we strongly recommend slow introductions, supervision, and teaching children how to interact gently and respectfully with animals.
The same principle applies when introducing a kitten to dogs or other pets. Even when animals are friendly, proper introductions should happen gradually and calmly in order to build trust and confidence.
In our experience, Maine Coons often adapt exceptionally well to multi-pet households when introductions are handled thoughtfully and the kitten is given time to settle at their own pace.
Every kitten is also an individual. Some are naturally bold and outgoing, while others may be more sensitive or observant at first. This is one reason why we place significant importance not only on color and appearance, but also on personality and temperament when helping families choose the right companion.
With patience, proper introductions, and a loving environment, Maine Coons often become deeply bonded members of the family — not only with adults, but with children and other pets as well 🐾

Maine Coons have long, thick coats that are beautiful but also require regular maintenance in order to stay healthy and comfortable. Fortunately, many Maine Coons genuinely enjoy grooming sessions when they are introduced to them gently from a young age.
In general, we recommend brushing a Maine Coon several times per week, although some cats may need more frequent grooming depending on their coat texture, season, age, and lifestyle.
Certain areas tend to mat more easily, especially:
behind the ears
under the front legs
along the belly
around the back legs and “pants” area
and under the collar if one is worn
Regular brushing helps:
prevent painful mats and tangles
reduce shedding around the home
minimize hairballs
distribute natural oils through the coat
and strengthen trust and bonding with your cat
During seasonal coat changes, especially in spring and fall, grooming may need to be done more often because Maine Coons can shed heavily during these periods.
We strongly recommend introducing grooming routines early while kittens are still young. Gentle, positive experiences with brushing, nail trimming, ear checks, and handling make long-term care much easier and less stressful for both the cat and the owner.
A few grooming tips that many Maine Coon owners find helpful:
Use a good-quality metal comb in addition to a brush, especially for deeper areas of the coat.
Short, regular grooming sessions are usually better than waiting until tangles develop.
Check problem areas frequently, even if the rest of the coat looks fine.
Keep grooming calm and positive — treats and praise can help create a good association.
Regular nail trimming is important, especially because Maine Coons are large, strong cats with powerful claws.
Many Maine Coons enjoy elevated grooming surfaces or routines that become part of daily interaction.
Bathing is not usually needed very often for pet Maine Coons, although some owners occasionally bathe their cats during heavy shedding periods or before shows. Many Maine Coons tolerate water surprisingly well compared to other breeds.
It is also important to remember that coat quality can vary significantly from cat to cat. Some Maine Coons have silky coats that are relatively easy to maintain, while others develop much thicker or woollier textures that require more attention.
With consistent care and routine maintenance, grooming becomes much easier over time and helps keep your Maine Coon healthy, comfortable, and looking their best 🐾

The first step in reserving a kitten is completing our Adoption Questionnaire. This helps us learn more about your home, lifestyle, and the type of kitten that may be the best fit for your family.
Once we review your questionnaire, we may contact you with additional questions, discuss available or upcoming kittens, and determine whether we are a good match for one another.
When a specific kitten is selected and both sides are ready to move forward, a reservation deposit is required in order to hold the kitten.
Our reservation deposit is typically $500 CAD and is applied toward the final purchase price of the kitten.
Because reserving a kitten means turning away other potential families and planning future placements accordingly, deposits are generally non-refundable. The only exception would be if the cattery decides not to proceed with the placement.
In some cases, families may also choose to join our early-access waiting list in order to receive updates and priority consideration before kittens are publicly posted on the website.
We believe that choosing a Maine Coon kitten should be a thoughtful and exciting process, and we are always happy to guide families through each step along the way 🐾

We do not work with commercial pet shipping companies.
Whenever possible, we strongly prefer that families pick up their kitten in person, as this allows for a calmer and more personal transition for both the kitten and the new owner.
For families who live farther away, air travel arrangements can sometimes be coordinated directly by the new owner through their preferred airline. In these situations, the family contacts the airline themselves to arrange the flight and travel details, while we prepare the kitten for travel and deliver them safely to Toronto Pearson International Airport for departure.
We always encourage the simplest and least stressful travel route possible, ideally with direct flights and minimal travel time.
Before any travel takes place, we carefully discuss:
the kitten’s age and readiness for travel
weather conditions
flight timing
carrier requirements
feeding and comfort during transport
and the overall suitability of the travel plan
The comfort, safety, and well-being of our kittens always come first.
Whenever possible, we also appreciate staying in contact during the kitten’s journey and receiving updates once they arrive safely in their new home 🐾

Maine Coons come in an incredible variety of colors and patterns, which is one of the many reasons the breed is so fascinating and unique.
Some of the most common colors include:
brown tabby
black tabby
silver tabby
blue (gray)
red/orange
cream
black smoke
tortoiseshell
and various combinations with white
Patterns may include classic tabby, mackerel tabby, shaded, smoke, solid, bicolor, and more.
One of the most interesting things about Maine Coon kittens is that their color and overall appearance often continue to develop as they grow. Some kittens appear lighter or more silver as babies, while warmer tones and richer markings may become more visible over time. Coat texture, ear tufts, mane development, and facial structure also continue to mature gradually during the first several years of life.
While color is often the first thing people notice, we always encourage future families to pay close attention to personality and temperament as well. Sometimes the kitten you initially did not expect becomes the perfect companion for your home and lifestyle.
You can visit our Available Kittens page to see current and upcoming kittens, along with photos and personality descriptions as they grow and develop 🐾

Maine Coons are a large, slow-maturing breed with unique nutritional needs. Unlike many other cats, they continue growing and developing for several years, with full maturity often reached around 4–5 years of age. Proper nutrition during kittenhood and early adulthood plays an important role in healthy bone development, muscle growth, coat quality, digestion, and overall well-being.
We recommend feeding a combination of high-quality wet and dry food rather than relying entirely on only one type. Wet food helps support hydration, while dry food can be convenient for small meals throughout the day.
In our cattery, we typically use premium kitten foods during the early stages of development and often continue kitten formulas longer than with smaller cat breeds because Maine Coons mature more slowly.
Some of the brands and foods we have used or recommended include:
Royal Canin Kitten
Royal Canin Persian
Purina Pro Plan Kitten
Ultra dry and wet foods
Weruva wet foods
and other high-quality diets appropriate for growth and digestion
However, every kitten is an individual, and preferences can vary. Some kittens naturally prefer wet food, while others enjoy dry food more. Gradual transitions are always important when changing foods in order to avoid digestive upset.
Maine Coons are known for their large size and active personalities, but maintaining a healthy body condition is still very important. Overfeeding or excessive treats can eventually place unnecessary stress on joints and overall health, especially as these cats become larger and heavier with age.
Fresh water should always be available, and many Maine Coons enjoy water fountains, which can encourage better hydration.
We also recommend:
feeding measured meals rather than unlimited free-feeding whenever possible
monitoring appetite and digestion closely
maintaining a consistent feeding routine
and avoiding sudden diet changes
Beyond nutrition itself, feeding time is also part of socialization and routine. Kittens learn comfort, trust, and household structure through consistent daily care and interaction.
As your kitten grows, their diet may gradually evolve depending on activity level, age, preferences, and veterinary recommendations. We are always happy to share guidance about what your kitten has been eating in our home and how to make the transition to their new environment as smooth as possible 🐾

Maine Coons are generally strong and resilient cats, but like all breeds, they benefit from responsible health monitoring and regular veterinary care.
Before going to their new homes, our kittens receive age-appropriate veterinary attention, including routine health checks, vaccinations, and deworming. New owners receive the kitten’s health record, which can be shared with their own veterinarian for continued care.
For Maine Coons, we recommend paying special attention to:
1. Regular veterinary exams
A routine wellness check helps monitor growth, weight, teeth, heart, lungs, digestion, coat condition, and overall development.2. Vaccination schedule
Kittens usually need a series of core vaccines during the first months of life, followed by boosters as recommended by your veterinarian.3. Parasite prevention
Even indoor cats may need parasite prevention depending on the household, other pets, travel, and local risk factors.4. Heart health
Maine Coons are known to have a breed-related risk for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Responsible breeders screen breeding cats, and we recommend discussing heart monitoring with your veterinarian as your kitten matures.5. Genetic health background
When choosing a Maine Coon kitten, it is important to ask about genetic testing of the parents, including HCM, SMA, and PKDef. In our cattery, all breeding cats are genetically tested through Basepaws before being included in our breeding program. Only cats that have been cleared of major genetic abnormalities are considered for responsible breeding. While no breeder can ever guarantee perfect health, careful genetic screening helps significantly reduce inherited health risks and supports the long-term well-being of future generations.6. Growth, joints, and weight
Because Maine Coons are large, slow-growing cats, maintaining a healthy weight is very important. Extra weight can place unnecessary stress on joints and overall health.7. Dental care
Dental health is often overlooked, but regular oral checks, proper diet, and veterinary dental advice can help prevent future problems.8. Spay/neuter planning
Spay or neuter timing should always be discussed with your veterinarian. Our veterinarian generally recommends waiting until at least six months of age before sterilization whenever possible, as early growth and hormonal development may play an important role in the healthy development of large-breed cats such as Maine Coons.Maine Coons continue developing for several years, so ongoing observation is important. Appetite, energy level, coat condition, litter box habits, breathing, and behavior can all provide useful clues about a cat’s well-being.
We always encourage new owners to establish a relationship with a trusted veterinarian soon after bringing their kitten home. This helps ensure a smooth continuation of care and gives your kitten the best possible start in their new family 🐾

To protect the health and safety of our cats and kittens, we no longer offer in-person visits to our cattery. This decision was made with great care, as even the smallest risk of introducing infection can have serious consequences in a breeding environment.
However, we understand how important it is to feel connected when choosing your future companion. That’s why we are happy to offer video calls as a safe and personal alternative! If you're interested in a particular kitten, we’d be glad to schedule a virtual visit and answer all your questions.
Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep our furry friends safe and healthy.
